The London Breakout Strategy: Trading the Asian Session Range
The London open often breaks the quiet Asian range. Learn how to mark the range, place breakout orders, filter fakeouts, and manage risk in this popular session strategy.

The London Breakout Strategy: Trading the Asian Session Range

Why the London Open Matters

The Asian session is often quiet for European pairs, creating a tight range. When London opens, liquidity jumps and price frequently breaks one side of that range.

Marking the Asian Range

Mark the high and low between roughly 00:00 and 07:00 UK time. Tighter ranges tend to produce stronger breakouts; very wide ranges reduce the reward available.

The Trade Plan

  • Buy stop a few pips above the range high
  • Sell stop a few pips below the range low
  • Stop loss at the opposite side or range midpoint
  • Target 1 to 2 times the range height

Cancel the unused order once one side triggers.

Avoiding Fakeouts

London often sweeps one side before moving the other way. Filters that help:

  • Trade only in the direction of the higher-timeframe trend
  • Wait for a candle close outside the range
  • Avoid days with major news at the open
