Drawdown Recovery: How to Survive and Rebuild After a Losing Streak
The Mathematics of Losses
Losses and gains are not symmetrical:
| Loss | Gain needed |
|---|---|
| 10% | 11% |
| 20% | 25% |
| 30% | 43% |
| 50% | 100% |
Protecting capital is easier than recovering it.

Understanding Maximum Drawdown
Maximum drawdown is the largest decline from an equity peak to a trough. Know your strategy's historical drawdown so a normal losing streak does not cause panic.

Reduce Risk as Drawdown Deepens
- Normal: 1% per trade
- Down 5%: 0.5% per trade
- Down 10%: 0.25% per trade, or pause
Restore normal size only after recovering part of the loss.

A Practical Recovery Process
- 1Pause for a day or two.
- 2Review your journal: execution errors or normal variance?
- 3Reduce size and trade only A-grade setups.
- 4Rebuild confidence with small, disciplined wins.

What Not to Do
Avoid doubling size to "win it back", switching strategies every week, or removing stop losses. These behaviours turn a manageable drawdown into a blown account.
